THE ENLIGHTEMENT
The enlightement is a cultura time that took place in Europe during th XVII-XVIII centuries. It proclaims the power of the reason over nature to conquer the progress, happiness and health of men at an indivudual and social level. According to this, the main purpose was to modernize the country and improve subjects and quality life by combining absolute monarchy with enlightement. It is interested: economic reactivation, cristicism of some aspects in the social reality, interest in the new liberal politics ideas and improvement of education system.
Enlightement despotism did not become a ew form of government as it maintained the privileges of states.
Jhon Locke, english author, thought that early education was essential in shaping an adult. Public schools appeared at this time. There were also schools for poor people (Charity Schools) and better schools for upper classes( borarding schools). Besides, tutor were hired to teach math, greek, writing reading and genttlement manners.
France was was based on the Roman Empire, but modernized during the French Revolution. In this country University had four categories: law, medicine, sciences and humanities. Besides, Napoleon set up as the main secondary education.
Education was the key to the plan of enlightement in Spain: creation of new institutions of secondary education, didactic and critical literature was also developed and press, literacy and scienctific magazines were developed.
On the one hand, the main European authors were Voltaire, Locke and Rousseau. Voltaire was a French a author that wrote importants works like The treaty of Tolerance and The Philosopical Dictionary. Locke was a liberal thinker that understood that the government was in charge of promoting happiness and well-being and he defended people’s rights and private property. Finally, Rousseauwrote Emaly or on education an important book that was banned because it explained new system of education.
On the other hand, the main Spanish authors were Feijoo, Luzuriaga and Campany. Feijoo was called “the Spanish Voltaire”. Luzuriaga defended that all children should guarantee equal access to facilities for their education. The last one, Campany was a writer of the Goverment Gazethe.
From my point of view, the enlightement was an important movement that imposed many changes based on the reason as it was the beginning of a new period.
